Migori mourns a court clerk and her rider shot dead in gun attack last Friday.
Detectives are investigating an incident in which a clerk of Migori High Court and her boda boda rider were shot dead by a lone gunman on Friday morning.
Phoebe Auma, 50, was being ferried to the court by the rider when they were attacked, witnesses and police said.
The incident happened Friday morning and it seems the gunman knew about the woman’s movements.
Police believe she was targeted probably because of her work.
The gunman was wearing a facemask at the time of the attack.
According to witnesses, the gunman accosted Auma and her rider when they slowed down from Gogo village to join the busy Kisii-Migori highway.
The gunman was riding a motorbike with a concealed number plate at the time of the incident.
Auma was shot twice in the neck and head, while the rider identified as Godfrey Misiko was shot in the head.
They died on the spot and their bodies were taken to a morgue in Migori town.
Police said they were yet to establish the motive of the attack.
Four empty cartridges of 7.62mm special were recovered from the scene.
The victims’ motorcycle was also recovered at the scene of the attack, which police termed as bizarre.
County police commander Mark Wanjala said they have launched investigations and no arrest had been made.
Police have so far talked to the family of the deceased woman and her workmates as part of the probe into the attack.
Chief Justice Martha Koome said police are investigating the deaths where the senior Court Assistant, as well as a boda boda operator, were killed.
CJ Koome said in a statement on Sunday that Auma Suda was the pillion passenger when a lone gunman on a bike shot at her and the boda boda rider, killing them on the spot.
“The matter is being investigated by local police and we will provide further details to the Judiciary family and wider public once the details of the investigation are made available,” CJ Koome said.
“On behalf of the Judiciary, I wish to convey our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to her family following this tragic event,”
Cases of murder have been on the rise in the recent past and most cases remain unsolved.
In 2022, there were 3,056 cases of homicide, 3,281 in 2021, 3,111 in 2020, 2,971 in 2019 and 2,856 in 2018.
