Police in Embakasi, Nairobi are looking for a 36-year-old man suspected of killing his former girlfriend. On 23 May 2023, the lifeless body of Winfred Mwende was found in a house in Tassia estate by her sister, with multiple stab wounds in the chest and neck.

According to police investigations, the suspect had bought a phone for Mwende just days before the relationship ended but it was missing when her body was discovered.

The suspect has since gone into hiding with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) vowing not to rest until they get a hold of him. On 25 May 2023, detectives visited the suspect’s place of work and house but did not find him.

Sources told the media that the suspect was the last person to communicate with the woman on the day she died.

The man who works in a factory in Embakasi, is said to have been enraged by Mwende’s decision to end their relationship a month ago. He was even more furious after he learnt she was in another relationship with a man who was known to the suspect.

Police reports indicated that the suspect had called Mwende several times and threatened her after he learnt her new boyfriend was using the mobile phone he had gifted her.

When DCI personnel arrived at the crime scene, they found the house in disarray, an indication of a violent confrontation between the two.

“Nothing was stolen other than the mobile phone. We believe the phone has something to do with the murder,” said a senior investigator.
