One student died while about 33 were injured in an accident involving a bus carrying students from Chavakali Boys High School in Kisumu.

The injured were rushed to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital in Kisumu for treatment following an accident on Monday night on the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway, police confirmed.

The bus was transporting the students to Nairobi following the closing of the school for the first term.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver lost control at Mamboleo roundabout in Kisumu.

The eyewitness said the driver seemed to be having a conversation on the roundabout when he lost control of the bus and hit the guard rail and landed on the side of the road. It was then that the 17-year-old student died on the spot.

The eye witness added that other students suffered minor injuries and are in good condition in hospital. Many parents called to check the safety of their loved ones. The students were rescued from the scene by an ambulance and good Samaritans.

This is happening amid an ongoing campaign to deal with the increase in accidents in the country.

Police and officers from the National Transport and Safety Authority are participating in a campaign to deal with the menace on the roads.

More than 1,000 people have lost their lives in road accidents since January this year. Others are suffering from injuries in various places after the accidents.

This may indicate at least 30 people die every day in accidents, officials said. This has left many families badly affected because such accidents have a negative impact on the family as a whole.

Speeding is the main cause of road accidents along with overlapping, drunkenness, carelessness and unfit vehicles on the road.
