Mathari Mental Hospital is set to relocate to Karen without two years in a move to address the increasing mental health challenge.
The 200 acres land in Karen has been identified for construction in a public-private partnership, involving both local and international private sector players.
The health ministry is negotiating with officials from an Italian health firm, Gruppo San Donato , to explore collaboration.
The Italian officials toured Mathari Hospital before touring the proposed site.
The new mental hospital will be renamed the Nation Teaching and Referral Neuropsychiatric Centre in Karen.
The move is aimed at making room at Mathari Hospital and upgrading it for other medical other purposes.
The partnership will train psychiatrusts and psychologists for the new hospital and the rest of the country.
Mathari Mental Hospital is the only national referral mental hospital, it was built in 1910.
The project will cost taxpayers over ksh. 5 billion.
