Embattled Haitian leader Ariel Henry has resigned after weeks of violence erupted by organized gangs in the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince.

Henry’s resignation as acting President and Prime Minister of the country will hopefully save the country from collapse.

Henry’s adviser Jean Junior Joseph confirmed this in his statement to CNN, stressing that he will continue to hold the position until the formation of a new transitional government. The leader of Guyana and the current Chairman of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) Irfaan Ali supported the move on Monday, March 11, in the evening in a press conference.

Ali, along with other Caribbean leaders, said Henry would end his tenure after naming a new interim prime minister. CARICOM leaders said the main role of the transitional government will be working towards elections and peaceful transition.
