Sri Lanka has been declared state of emergency today after the president flee to Maldives following protests against economic crisis and citizens raiding the presidential residence.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa flee the country accompanied by his wife and two bodyguards.
This comes after president Rajapaska promised to resign on Wednesday, July 13th .
He flee his official residence in Colombo just before thousands of protesters raided the residence. A group of protesters had raided the premises earlier on, ate food, and lived in the residence with the president.
The demonstrators raided the office of the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who would automatically become the acting president in the even to resignation of the president- demanding him to also go.
Wickremesinghe has nnounced that his willingness to resign if a consensus is reached on forming a unity government.
The police fired tear gas to stop the protesters from overruning the compound and imposed curfews across the Western province to be able to contain the situation.
