Kenyatta University has issued a statement, hours after its bus was involved in a fatal accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

In a statement issued on Tuesday morning, the management of the institution confirmed the occurrence of the accident on Monday night and announced that they have already sent a team of experts to deal with the situation, provide accurate information and help the survivors. The vice chancellor, Professor Paul K. Wainaina also confirmed that several students lost their lives in the accident.

The statement further said, “The team includes two doctors, medical officers, university security officers as well as student and staff welfare officers. Some of the injured students are in the process of being assessed for possible evacuation to Nairobi depending on their condition .”

The institution however said that they are not in a position to state the exact number or names of the victims of the accident, but confirmed that some students lost their lives. The vice chancellor also took the opportunity to console the families who lost their loved ones and emphasized that the institution is with them.

At least 11 Kenyatta University students died on Monday evening in a fatal road accident involving their school bus and a trailer, Voi Sub County Police Commander Ibrahim Daffala confirmed. Daffala said 10 students died on the spot while another died in hospital.

42 students suffered serious injuries while four had minor injuries.
