The Ministry of Education, under the Government of Kenya, has announced adjustments to the school opening schedule due to ongoing heavy rains and resultant floods across the country.

Originally slated to commence on Monday, April 29, learners will now begin reporting to school starting May 6, 2024.

This decision stems from the Ministry’s assessment of the situation, prompted by reports of adverse effects of the inclement weather on Basic Education Learning Institutions nationwide.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, in his announcement of the postponement, emphasized the need for caution and safety amidst the challenges posed by the heavy rains.

He highlighted the Ministry’s directive to gather data from field officers regarding the impact of the weather on schools, which was corroborated with information from relevant government agencies.

According to Machogu, several schools across different regions have been severely affected by the rains, necessitating measures to ensure the safety of learners and staff.

The severity of the floods, which have disrupted transportation and claimed over 70 lives, underscores the gravity of the situation.

Many homes have been inundated, displacing families who have sought refuge in schools and other public facilities.

The Ministry’s decision to delay school openings reflects a proactive approach to prioritize the well-being of students and staff, acknowledging the need for comprehensive safety measures before resuming normal activities in affected areas.
