President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has contracted COVID-19 ,according to the latest reports by health officials.

In a statement, Diane Atwine, the permanent secretary at the Uganda’s Health Ministry, said Museveni had tested positive for COVID-19 after developing mild flu-like symptoms.The health official said the 78 year old, who is in good health condition will continue discharging his duties, while observing standard operating procedures for handling COVID cases.

 

While giving the State of the Nation address, Museveni had also hinted at having contracted the virus.In his speech, the long serving president said he had felt a slight cold, prompting him to request COVID tests.At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Uganda had been among the Africa’s toughest containment  that included curfews, businesses and school closures, the shutting of borders.

 

Since the pandemic, Museveni, who is vaccinated against COVID, has always been seen in public wearing a mask and has always conducted his official duties while social distancing. In most cases he would often be seen seated alone in a tent on the lawn of his office when meeting visitors.
