The price of seafood, also known as Omena, has doubled due to the increase in the cost of living and heavy rain.

An investigation done by media has revealed that, in Siaya County, many families do not buy Omena due to the unaffordability of the market price.

“Cooking ugali for my family with sukuma wiki and omena every day is difficult. I can have ugali and sukuma wiki without omena ,” said Mr Joash Owino, a bodaboda operator in Siaya town and a father of three children.

Mr Owino explains that despite its scarcity, the price of Omena has been rising from time to time.

“Today you buy a can of 250 grams for Sh70, tomorrow the price will rise to Sh100. The price is determined by many factors such as price of fuel, the laws in fishing areas in Lake Victoria and depending on the seasons,” he explained.

In the five counties bordering Lake Victoria where the fish are found, the price of a 2 kg can known as gorogoro is between Sh400 and Sh500.
