About ten passengers have died and 11 others have been injured in an accident involving two passenger cars and a truck in the Salama area, on Mombasa Road.

The collision involved two tricycles and a trailer. The deceased include two female children between the ages of five and eight, a male youth approximately five years old, three female and four male adults. The accident happened on Monday, April 1 night after the matatu collided head-on with an oncoming truck, police and witnesses said.

The police said that the accident happened in Mlima Kiu area and involved three vehicles that were heading towards Nairobi. Eyewitnesses said that the truck driver is said to have failed to follow his proper lane of traffic and also turned right suddenly and without warning and thus collided head-on with matatus from two saccos of the area.

The accident also affected the saloon car at the scene. Four passengers were killed on the spot while others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, police said. 4 passengers who were in different cars are feared dead while others are seriously injured and have been rushed to Sultan Hamud hospital. The injured were rushed to the Sultan Hamud hospital with multiple injuries.

The rescue was badly hampered by the rain that was lashing the area at the time, officials said. The bodies were moved to the local mortuary awaiting identification and post-mortem. The crash affected traffic on the busy highway for more than two hours before more reinforcements arrived to help bring the situation under control. The highway is said to be one of the leading causes of accidents.
