The Orange Democratic Movement has demanded that the protection of Kisii Governor Simba Arati be strengthened following allegations of harassment by the police.

In a statement on Monday, ODM also called for immediate action to be taken against those responsible for the abuse.

The party expressed its disappointment that the government has not yet taken action since the emergence of a leaked audio clip of a telephone conversation between Arati, the party’s vice-chairman and a person alleged to be a senior police officer.

In the five-minute clip, the man is heard talking about the police plan to “manage” the political situation in Kisii County.

A voice in the clip is heard ordering Arati and his followers to be dealt with.

As part of the investigation into the alleged intimidation, the government through the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) requested search warrants at the home or homes of 14 Arati supporters.

In a mixed application before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kisii, the DCI claimed that the 14 people were in possession of illegal weapons that were used to commit crimes in the county.
