The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has reported that more than 500,000 taxpayers have reaped the benefits of the ongoing Tax Amnesty Programme, which has facilitated the rectification of their tax compliance status.

Through the initiative, taxpayers have successfully settled overdue principal taxes amounting to Ksh.20.8 billion, alongside self-disclosed unpaid taxes totaling Ksh.28.7 billion.

Additionally, KRA has waived penalties and interests totaling Ksh.244.7 billion for individuals who previously defaulted on tax filing and payment obligations.

With the programme set to conclude on June 30, 2024, KRA is urging more taxpayers to participate.

Those who have yet to file their returns or have incurred penalties and interest on unpaid taxes are encouraged to seize this opportunity for rectification.

Introduced under the Finance Act of 2023, the Tax Amnesty Programme allows taxpayers to receive amnesty on penalties and interest accrued up to December 31, 2022, upon full payment of their principal taxes by the specified deadline.

“It’s important to note that there will be no further amnesties or waivers after this date, and the programme does not apply to customs and import duties,” stated KRA on Thursday.

The overarching goal of the Tax Amnesty Programme is to enhance compliance and revenue collection while offering relief to taxpayers grappling with tax disputes.

As the deadline approaches, KRA emphasizes the significance of seizing this opportunity for individuals seeking to regularize their tax affairs and contribute to the country’s economic development.
